Include Sunlight Exposure When Comparing a Garage Floor Coating

The strip of a garage floor near an open door may experience different light exposure from the sheltered rear of the room. Before selecting a color and system, tell the provider how the space is actually used. Appearance stability under light is a separate question from whether the coating serves its other intended functions.

Describe where exposure occurs

Identify doors, windows or skylights and the ordinary periods when the garage is open. Note which area will receive the coating and whether the proposed finish continues outdoors. A single interior photograph may not communicate those conditions. Do not infer exposure limits from the word garage or assume that every surface within a doorway shares the same environment. Ask the provider to explain the intended system boundary before a sample becomes an order.

Read the whole system’s appearance limits

Manufacturer information can distinguish ultraviolet-related color change from other product properties. The cited September 2026 Sika document also cautions that a clear UV-resistant topcoat may not prevent discoloration of underlying coatings. That is a product-specific example, not a universal statement about all finishes or an endorsement of a system. Ask the actual provider what its selected assembly is designed to do under the described exposure, including the layers below the final surface.

Agree on the appearance question before work

Keep the selected color, sample purpose and relevant limitations with the project scope. Distinguish a preference for appearance from technical suitability or a new warranty promise. Ask what comparison conditions would be useful if an appearance concern is later reviewed; lighting and surface condition should not be silently changed to make images look identical. If the owner’s priority cannot be supported by the proposed system’s information, request an appropriate alternative review before proceeding. The aim is a finish decision based on the real environment rather than a broad label such as durable or clear-coated.

Worked example

Illustrative example: a fictional owner keeps the garage door open for much of the day and wants one uniform floor color. The provider reviews that exposure with the actual system information before selection. The owner does not assume that adding any clear coat guarantees identical color everywhere indefinitely.
